Austin Improv Group Taking Over the World One Venue at a Time

May 29, 2006

Fresh off the road from their spring festival tour, Austin improv comedy troupe ColdTowne is producing a week's worth of sample programming at The Space in advance of operating the art/theatre venue this fall. Test Pattern will feature a mix of music, stand up comedy, sketch, improv and interactive video performance throughout the week.

The ColdTowne troupe was formed in New Orleans in 2005. Following Hurricane Katrina, five of the members relocated to Austin, Texas, where they have been performing regularly at improv festivals and producing their own shows, including the sold-out "Hurricanes Are Funny". One of the ColdTowne members, Chris Trew, is the founder of HumorFeed member site Studio 8.

"We're very excited about this opportunity," says ColdTowner Arthur Simone. "Austin's been so great and accepting since we've been here, and to be given our own theatre space/comedy venue is more than we could ever had hopped for." This is the fourth event ColdTowne has produced at the space.

"We did a three day festival, See. Hear. Speak., in January and an improv Prom in March. We also helped produce the Out of Bounds Fundraiser in mid May," recalls ColdTowne member Tami Nelson. "They were so successful, we were asked by the ownder to start booking it seven days a week." Test Pattern's purpose is to help ColdTowne iron out any kinks and experiment with different kinds of programming before opening up the Space full time.

Austin's Manateemann will play the Opening Party on Thursday, June 8th. Funniest Person in Austin Semi Finalist and New Orleans transplant Seth Cockfield will host two sets of Austin area standups on Friday, June 9th. Saturday night, June 10th, three of Austin's best improv troupes - ColdTowne, the Available Cupholders and Parallelogramophonograph - will perform extended sets, followed by a dance party. On Sunday, June 11, ColdTowne will host Skillz Night - an evening of instructional interactive video comedy. McMahon!, an improvised WWE Monday Night Raw wrestling commentary show, debuts on Monday, June 12. Wednesday, June 14 is Sketch night, featuring Kazillionaire*, Tight, the Plurals and Frontera Fest favorites McNichol and May.

Doors open at 7pm for all shows. Start times and covers vary. For more information, please contact Michael Jastroch at (504) 905-2581 or or visit
